Ever wondered why university professors & teachers never make the entrepreneurial rich lists and are often forced to wear jackets with patches on their sleeves?
Maybe, it has something to do with George Bernard Shaw’s expression “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.”
The answer though, as applied to we who are in business:
Business Knowledge of itself has no value – the value only occurs when somebody does something pro-active with it.
True, it’s not what you know that’s important; it’s what you do with what you know!
Look, I make no bones about it. In my business career as a business writer, speaker, educator, consultant & coach, I have simply peddled massive doses of common-sense surrounding the practical basics of business, wrapped in an intriguing coat of simple solutions & savvy ideas.
With a newsletter database of some 22,000 paying subscribers I did hear on more than one occasion a subscriber say “I know this” to which my reply was instant and delivered with intent, “I know you do, but the more important question is what have you done to implement or apply what you know?
Incidentally, that expression “I know” is one of the most damaging comments you can hear as an educator, for it means the lesson is over before it even began, because the listener “knows”.
Do they know or do they only think they know? But know what, because you never even got the opportunity to tell them anything, you were cut off at the knees! Parents of teenagers know what I’m referring to here, I’m sure.
So, when we know, why don’t we do?
Simple answer: We didn’t want it badly enough to be pro-active in achieving it …whatever the “it” might be!
KEY POINT
When you know but don’t do you don’t want it badly enough to give it a priority! |
Moment of truth:
Are you applying your depth of business knowledge properly?
If not consider just two issues (which you should ask of yourself regularly):
How badly do you want it and what are you prepared to give up in order to achieve it?
Here’s to more sales, profits and cash from your business,
